In many sources and news you can see the phrase "home volcanoes", but what does it mean and what kind of volcanoes are they? If you are geographically located in the cities of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky or Yelizovo, then the locals call a group of Avachinsky, Kozelsky and Koryak volcanoes "home volcanoes", because they are closest to these cities. Also, extinct volcanoes Arik and Aag, which are smaller than their neighbors, are sometimes added to this list.

But, for example, for residents of the village of Klyuchi, the volcanoes of the Klyuchevskaya group will be considered "home volcanoes": Nameless, Kamen, Klyuchevskaya and others.

Let's go back to the volcanoes of the regional capital. They can be seen from almost anywhere in the city, but be vigilant — this is only possible in good weather. But how do you get to them?

The most popular road to the home volcanoes runs along the Dry River. The parking lot, from where everyone starts the journey, is about 30 km away. from the city. To the Avacha Pass on the Dry River, the road will have to be overcome in 20 km.

Avachinsky pass

Avachinsky Pass is located at an altitude of 1000 meters and offers a panoramic view of the Koryaksky and Avachinsky volcanoes, Kozelsky hides behind Avachinsky. There is a high probability of meeting Beringian ground squirrels— evrazhek. These are fluffy animals, weighing no more than 800 grams. Previously, tourists used to come here with the aim of taking photos with European caps, handing them goodies, and this has become a big problem.

Employees of the Volcanoes of Kamchatka Nature Park, which includes the Avachinsky Pass, ask tourists not to feed wild animals, even such small ones, because it will only harm them. If you will be traveling by public transport around the city, you will notice a lot of drawings of local children participating in a social project that encourages not to feed wild animals. Therefore, you can take beautiful pictures with eurocuts, but without nuts and other goodies.

There are several tourist bases and a base of volcanologists on the territory of the Avacha Pass.

Mount Camel

If your goal is not to conquer volcanoes, but you want to make a small ascent, then you definitely need to climb Mount Camel. By type, this mountain is an extrusion. Viscous lava erupted from the foot of the volcano during the eruption and froze in two "humps", because of this type it was called a Camel. The height of Mount Camel is 1200 m., and the relative height is 200 m. Climbing the mountain will take about an hour, but the view from here is fascinating.

Koryak volcano

The height of this volcano is easy to remember — 3 456 m. This is an active stratovolcano with a pronounced cone shape. It is quite difficult for climbing and is not included in the list of popular tourist destinations. Climbers with appropriate training and equipment climb here, and the Russian Mountaineering Federation allocates routes of categories from 1B to 3A here. Previously, the volcano had another name — Arrow. Due to the fact that the locals extracted volcanic glass from it, which was often used to make arrowheads.

Avacha volcano

You can see how the Avacha volcano is smoking even from the city. It's all about the fumarole fumes from the crater. The volcano has an interesting shape— it used to be as conical as its neighbors, but during a strong eruption, the walls collapsed and the upper part of the volcano would have sunk inside the foot, so now we can see two cones, one on the other. A plug has formed in the crater of the volcano, which holds back the lava inside.

Climbing the Avacha volcano, whose height is 2 741 m., is not easy, but accessible to tourists. The climbing season starts in August, and the locals even organize a mass ascent to the Avacha volcano, which usually takes about 200 people.

You can come to the Avachinsky Pass in winter and in summer, you can always feel the powerful energy of volcanoes and the wild nature of Kamchatka.
