This is the best opportunity to admire the grottoes hidden in Avacha Bay and our “home” volcanoes protecting and guarding the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
You will have a chance to see numerous representatives of the Kamchatka’s wild fauna, including ocean birds (tufted puffins, gulls, cormorants) and large marine mammals (seals, sea otters and others).
“Three Brothers” is a landmark attraction in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. These kekurs (isolated column-shaped rocks) are located immediately past the entrance from the Pacific Ocean into Avacha Bay.
Each participant of the group on the tour is provided with a life jacket, kayak, spray skirt and a paddle.
Kayaking: Three Brothers
The name comes from an ancient legend, according to which three brothers defended the bay by stopping a giant wave from the Pacific Ocean/ This did not please the God of the Seas, so he turned the brothers into rocks. Since then, they have been guarding the bay from dangers.
Group meeting in the centre of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. We will then drive to Bolshaya Lagernaya Bay and will have some free time to walk around and sunbathe while the team prepares the kayaks. Bolshaya Lagernaya (formerly Bolshaya Okeanskaya) was once home to a fairly large village, where locals produced wooden barrels, nets and trawls for the needs of one of the fishing companies of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Until 1984, almost 1.5 thousand people had lived here. No buildings remain and only the foundations of several houses remind of the former settlement.
Briefing
After a sea kayaking safety briefing, we will get into the kayaks and paddle out on the water. PLEASE NOTE! With a large number of participants, the group is divided into two and goes out into the water taking turns, accompanied by a guide, while the other stays on the beach at the base camp.
Kayaking to the “Three Brothers” rock islets
Shortly after the start, as soon as you get comfortable on the water, we will reach Cape Lagerny and the Chortov Palets (Devil’s Finger) kekurs, which rise several tens of meters above the water. We will approach them as close as possible, literally at arm’s length. Our voyage lies along the rocky cliffs towards the Shlyupochnaya Bay, home to the “Three Brothers” kekurs, a natural monument of regional significance. Legend has it that these were three brothers who had protected the bay from a big ocean wave and once the wave subsided, they turned to stone and to date keep on guarding the bay from dangers. On the way to the islets there will be a chance to observe sea birds and mammals, seals or sea lions
Lunch at Shlyupochnaya Bay
We will reach Shlyupochnaya Bay and disembark for lunch.
Return to the camp, back to the city
Our return journey to Bolshaya Lagernaya Bay will take about 1 hour. Return to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
We will help you choose a program and book a place
If you ask me what happiness is for me, then I will say that happiness is holding a paddle in my hands and, cutting through the waves rushing along the rocky shore of my native Avacha Bay in a kayak. The last time I saw these rocks was when I was a 5-year old girl. And now, after 15 years, we met again... and looking at these stone giants, I am full of admiration just like when I was a child. Where else, if not in Kamchatka, will you be able to paddle like this to one of the most recognisable natural attractions in Russia, meeting curious seals and impudent seagulls along the way? And all this is close to the city. A wild world bordering modernity. I love you, life. I love you, Kamchatka.
We celebrated the Russian Navy Day by sailing to the famous “Three Brothers” islets with the guys from the Kamchatka Freeride Community. Big thanks to them. Caught waves on the way back, or rather the waves caught up with us, but this has only added to the thrill of the journey.
